How to watch the Daily Show without tweaking anything on your internet connection
UPDATE: Comedy Central obviously took back the blocking and the Videostream is available again as before. So, it's not necessary anymore to tweak it. Yay!
---
I regularily watched the Daily Show on it's homepage. This seems to be over, because obviously Comedy Central blocks the video stream to visitors from outside the USA.
I could, of course, use an IP-proxy, VPN or another kind of technical workaround that helps to circumvent regional blocking. But why should i, when there is an even easier way that just needs 2 minutes of preparation and 1 minute to change the videostream i want to watch next?
Today i wondered, why i could see featured videos, that are embedded on the official Facebook-Page, so i tried to do the same thing: embed a video to my homepage. And what happened? It worked just fine:
All you need to see the stream again from a file your desktop is:
1. Copy this snippet of code to a textfile in an editor
(or just download this file where i already put it in):
<html><body><object width="450" height="310"
data="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:cms:item:comedycentral.com:373351" type="application/x-shockwave-flash">
<param name="src"
value="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:cms:item:comedycentral.com:373351" />
<param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" />
</object></body></html>
2. Get to the Daily Show homepage, open the page with the stream you want to watch and klick on "view sourcecode" in your browser-menu or by a right mouseklick. Search for the string "item:thedailyshow.com:" or "item:comedycentral.com:" and copy the number behind it (in the example above it's "373351").
3. Exchange the number 373351 of the snippet with the number you got from the page with copy and paste (two times). Save the textfile with the ending .html instead of .txt.
4. Doublecklick on the file. It should open in your browser, the stream starts and you can watch the episode exactly as you did before (you can even use the fullscreen-button).
This works of course as well with IDs that you find on the Colbert Report pages.
Or - this comes from @chrisschmitz and works fine with Crome-Browsers (and others too, i guess) - you just open this URL and paste the number at the end of the URL that is marked bold here:
"...item:comedycentral.com:373351"
Oh, and Comedy Central: Suckers!
